ONE (SINGAPORE) is dedicated to raising public awareness and taking concrete actions to Make Poverty History.
Every three seconds a child dies - completely unnecessarily - from extreme poverty. It doesn’t have to be this way. One by one, we can make a difference.
In the year 2000, UN adopted a plan and set time-bound quantifiable targets called the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) to halve world poverty by 2015 and eradicate it completely by 2025. A list of the eight MDGs can be found here:
www.millenniumcampaign.org
It is now 6 years on from the setting of the these goals and it is clear that we have a long way to go. Charities and non-profit groups around the world - including ONE in the US, Make Poverty History in the UK and Hottokenai in Japan - have joined together in a Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP) to hold countries to their commitments.
Here in Singapore, we have a tremendous opportunity as the World Bank and IMF hold their annual general meetings here in September. ONE (SINGAPORE) can share the spotlight and highlight the role that individuals can play in the movement to eradicate extreme poverty. We have embarked on a multi-pronged strategy:
- Make Poverty History poster campaign
- “CLICK” video featuring Singapore celebritiesProduction houses and entertainment companies are coming on board - offering to volunteer their time - to produce a localized version of this Make Poverty History video with Singaporean celebrities. We have a sponsor who is interested in broadcasting the video on the big screen outside Suntec and we will be speaking with theatres and TV channels for additional exposure. For a look at the original video, check out www.makepovertyhistory.org/video.
- MAKE POVERTY HISTORY CELEBRITY CONCERT - Saturday 16 September
This date coincides with the start of an international “Month of Mobilisation”. It’s also the Saturday before the World Bank - IMF meetings. Just like our mandate, the objectives of this concert – which will feature stars like Stefanie Sun, Tanya Chua and Taufik - are two-fold: to raise public awareness about global poverty issues and take concrete actions to make poverty history. At this concert, we will ask ticket holders to bring at least one pair of eyeglasses to donate to a project for the less fortunate. Any profits generated by the concert will be donated to a Mercy Relief project in earthquake-stricken Java. And we are going to launch an Effective Giving and Social Entrepreneurship Portal.
- THE EFFECTIVE GIVING & SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP WEB PORTAL
As individuals, we can also make an impact through Effective Giving and Volunteer Service. This web portal will be a one-stop shop for giving time, resources or money to charities across Asia.
- RAISING AWARENESS WITH THE NEXT GENERATION
Implement an education program in schools and universities (amounting to over 1,000 locations in Singapore) to educate students on the issues and cultivate empathy with the situation. The idea being that these people are the people that will be carrying on the fight against poverty over the next twenty years.
We are at an advanced stage with items 1 and 2; 4 is in design phase; for 5, the program has already been devised and are awaiting the previous 4 items to be completed before implementing and 3 is awaiting confirmation of celebrity attendance, venue availability and funding.
This is where we need your help.
We need to raise pledges of about S$350,000 within the next two weeks to make all this happen. That’s a lot of money.
